I hope to get more time to be online and catch up with you all on my day off Wednesday...Thanks for comments on my Saguaro cactus! Hard to get back into the routine!
Hillary Yasmer Shemin > Post 198 7/2/08 Dancing cones! Ready and waiting to hold an icy treat!

After our walk yesterday, Steve and I went for water ice at our local "Rita's". I don't know how far away from the Philly area the Rita's reputation has spread, but for us it is a summer ritual..and last night was double stamp Tuesday so we could get twice the stamps and get a free treat the next time we come! Mmmm black cherry water ice..tasty!
This was shot with my 100mm 2.8 while was standing at the window while the young vendor fixed up our ices for us. No flash, of course.

Tonight Steve invited me to go for a walk after dinner...I have been terribly lazy about any exercise lately so appreciated the extra kick to get out, though tired after a work day. The best incentive besides our time together was that maybe I would find my picture of the day. Well, here it is! This is Ted...he is a Golden Retriever mix..and very, very sweet. It was late and the light was low so the pictures tended to be rather grainy and soft, but I like this one with the sepia treatment. What do you think?

I loved Ceejanerun's photo yesterday of that handsome dog and I guess it inspired me to catch this shot of this great pup!!!

Hillary Yasmer Shemin > Post 185 - 6/15/08 - Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia,PA

This is a copy of a photo I have in my "My Favorites Gallery"...Steve and I visited Eastern State Penitentiary a year ago this month. It is a fascinating old, crumbling prison with a wonderful self-guided tour. There are a few of us in the area who are planning to visit it in August on Wednesday the 13th at 2 PM. If you are or will be in the Philly area and would like to join us, that would be great. Just e-mail me to let me know to expect you and keep you posted on any changes or additions to the plans. There are some nice restaurants very close by so we will probably hang out for dinner after. I hope you will be able to join us!

Hillary Yasmer Shemin > Post 241 9/2/08 Nuestra amiga Lucia!

We have known this little girl since before she was born...4 years ago. We had a great afternoon with her and her family and other friends of ours in a distant suburb of Buenos Aires. I had a great opportunity to take lots of shots of the children, children with parents and grandparents and our group together. Actually the group shot with me and Steve that you will eventually be able to see was set up by me, but a young woman near us was kind enough to take the pictures. I hadn't brought my tripod with me...( Shame I forgot that I still had that darned new polarizing filter on and couldn't figure out why I was having to boost the ISO so much..I always forget something!!!)

We are really enjoying ourselves as many of you have commented on...I do apologize that I am not taking any time to comment. I just know if I get started, it will be hard to stop so I will have to wait until I get home. I will say that I have glanced at some of the pics each day and you all are the best..so creative and skilled. Your photography has been great inspiration to me and motivation to do better. Thanks for your continued comments and time to look at my photos even though I am not giving back! Besos!
Hillary Yasmer Shemin > March 19th, 2008 - Yesterday at work, one of the women who works at the front desk came running back to my treatment room and said someone came in apologizing for her 'melt down' with me in the chair the other day and brought me flowers!!! I had no idea what she was talking about. Since I have only been in this office for 6 months I don't remember people by name all the time yet, but when I saw her, I remembered her. She didn't really have a 'melt down', she has a sister with 3rd stage breast cancer who just had a mastectomy and got a MRSA infection in the wound. My patient had just returned the night before from Florida where she had been helping her single parent sister with her children. My patient had lost her mother to breast cancer and an aunt as well. She didn't have a melt down, she just needed someone to talk to who would listen. I was happy I could be that person for her at that moment no flowers were necessary, but I was very touched that she would want to bring them to me. As a Dental Hygienist it is a special part of what I do to have the opportunity to build relationships with my patients. This was a very touching response from her to bring me a gift like that. I knew I would want to take pictures of the flowers to remember this thank you gift.

These are the beautiful flowers she brought me..a kind of Lily, right? Anyway, I kept them at work to enjoy them and brought them home today. When I got into the car I put them on the floor of the passenger side. I realized with the soft light of a cloudy, rainy day and my 50mm 1.4 lens on my RebelXT I had my potd!!! I sat in my car taking pictures for a few minutes, then drove to the supermarket. The light was brighter there when I parked so I sat in the car and took a few more. This was from my first shots near work and is straight from the memory card. I didn't crop, sharpen or anything!!! What do you think??? I actually am pretty proud of this shot.

Here is a link to all the Lily shots I took today.

Hillary Yasmer Shemin > Post 149 - 4/29/08 - Happy Mother's Day to me - EARLY!!!

Well, I asked my 3 men to indulge me in a photo shoot for Mother's Day. They had asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day and this was it!!!

Tonight after work we went to our little park and took some shots. Yes, Rick, I know this is not in sharp focus, err uhh...this is my soft focus shot!!! {thanks everyone ;-)} AND I like the shot. I made it into Black and White since it wasn't very sharp.

I have to admit, I was really nervous to do this "shoot". I didn't want my family to be impatient with me and I so wanted the shots to come out well. I understand better that it is hard to come up with interesting poses and a variety of poses. Fortunately as we started taking more shots, my sons started getting a little silly and then it was a little looser and more natural. Because the light was getting low and I had a higher ISO the shots are more grainy than I wanted. This is actually a second post for the day, but I was too excited to finally have a shot of my three men together. My sons have endured me taking their pictures so much over the years that they have really been reluctant to pose any more. This was a joy for me that were were together for a few nights again while my older son was visiting and that they indulged me for an hour to take pictures. We all had some great laughs at the slideshow of all of them as there were some really funny shots. This will be a gallery that I will treasure as my Mother's Day gift for 2008 and can enjoy it for a long time to come.

Now I need to find a class for portrait photography!!!
Hillary Yasmer Shemin > Post 221 8/5/08 HI EVERYBODY!!! I HAVE MISSED YOU!!!

This was the very first photo I took while away in Chicago last week for my Dental Hygiene conference (starting to work on photo gallery of conference in my Featured Galleries section) I had a great time, took a bunch of photos which I promised many people access too...I am quite overwhelmed with sorting them. Worked yesterday and again today, then tomorrow, Steve and I are going away, together this time to visit friends down south!!! I am sorry to not see all your wonderful pictures, but I just don't have time!!!! I will do what I can when I get back...

Now, about this pic. I stayed with a cousin and her husband in their gorgeous 46th floor apartment overlooking the Chicago River toward Lake Michigan. This was my very first of many wonderful city views. Chicago is a fantastic city. We were next to Millenium Park and Grant Park, I saw 'The Bean', took an Achitecture tour up the Chicago River on a boat and just loved every minute of the City on top of a really rewarding and great professional conference.

Thanks for looking!!!! Hugs to you all!
Hillary Yasmer Shemin > Post 202 -July 7th, 2008 Meet my neighbor Kai!!!

This huge dog lives in my neighborhood and weeks ago I asked his owner if we could do a little 'photo shoot' and she was very agreeable about doing it, but....time flew by. Then, tonight Steve and I were driving out of the parking lot (to go take our walk at the park) while Kai was being walked. Steve supportively offered to stop if I wanted to take some shots...didn't have to ask me twice!!! Kai's mom was on the phone the whole time, she did manage to hold him back after he jumped up once..I am not afraid of dogs, but he could knock me and the 40D over and I really don't want the 40D to get hurt, ya know what I mean??? Anyway. This one I played with... Here are some others:
